The 5 Steps
Completing a CAPRE Program involves Five Steps:
Step 1. The Critical Appraisal
Here you can review the critically appraised information and initiate a literature search on the topic. The Automatic Literature Search is a unique feature of CAPRE. When selected, it automatically takes you to Medline. This allows you to identify any important articles on the topic that have been published since the last dated research was undertaken. The Bottom Line provides a short summary of the data.
Step 2. Patient Selection
Identify a patient in your practice to whom the problem applies and you think would be receptive to a new strategy. Print the Patient Information Sheet and the Physician-Patient Partnership Paper (PPPP). These are provided to help explain and encourage the new approach with the patient.
Step 3. Information for Patient
Present the information to the patient, encouraging the patient to consider the recommendations, to complete the PPPP form and to return to discuss his/her conclusion with you.
Step 4. Physician-Patient Partnership
On the patient’s return visit, negotiate an agreement based on finding common ground that is best for the patient. The use of the PPPP is optional. Many physicians find that using a patient-centred method without recording a formal contract with the patient is adequate. Physicians who are concerned that evidence-based recommendations may not conform to practice in their community may find the written agreement helpful.
Step 5. Practice Reflection Exercise
Complete the Reflection Exercise with your observations and reflections on the process and consider how you might have dealt with incorporating the new ideas into your practice more effectively. Also complete the Program Evaluation Form.
Completing step 5 is a required component if you wish to obtain your Mainpro-C credits. These required forms are submitted on-line.
